O God it is your will to hold both heaven and earth in a single peace.
Let the design of your great love shine on the waste of our wraths and sorrows,
and give peace to your Church, peace among nations,
peace in our homes, and peace in our hearts;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

What if God was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make His way home
Tryin' to make His way home
Back up to Heaven all alone
Nobody callin' on the phone
'Cept for the Pope maybe in Rome
The above excerpt is from a popular song that's been playing on the radio recently. Sounds like she's singing about the Incarnation, albeit in a rather different setting than that of a sleepy, little cattle stall in the Middle East. But maybe Osborne is simply helping the modern listener discover that God is one of us, just a slob like one of us.

While the rest of our woes seem to pale in comparison to last Tuesday's events, we are again being urged to write to our federal MP's concerning the residential school litigation. The government has broken their promise not to use the media in the negotiations and has continued to stall in finding any kind of equitable solution for the claimants and the church. Tuesday Evening Course at Diocesan College, 3473 University, Montreal
Tuesdays from 7:15 pm to 9:30 pm.
October 16th to November 20th, 2001
The passion we read about in the Old Testament sometimes scares us. Both God and the people feel so strongly and speak so emotionally, we often feel uncomfortable. And yet, we are enticed by this passion. This faith is real, alive, palpable. What can we learn by entering into the passion of the OT? The mystics also fascinate us for the same reasons. What can the mystics teach us about loving God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength?
In the first hour of each evening we explore Passion in the Old Testament. In hour two, we examine the Passionate Mystics.

Parishes and deaneries that were involved in the DOCC training Conference in May are now organizing for their local DOCC programs. Some DOCC courses will be offered in the parish, others between two parishes, and some at the deanery level. DOCC is a twenty-one week experience of Christian community and Christian teaching. Each session begins with a 20-30 minute presentation followed by a small group discussion led by trained facilitators. Topics covered include: Becoming the Church, The Biblical Faith, Love and Salvation, Prayer, The Word of God. Over time, the group learns to listen and respect the faith journey of others in the group and comes to a better understanding of their own call to ministry in Christ's Church.
The following listing indicates those who have already begun to plan a DOCC session
in their area. More groups will be organizing and I will report on them
in later issues of this newsletter. If anyone would like to know more
about the program, contact the presenter of one of these parishes,

Reaching for a broader and deeper religious experience and understanding is the goal of five of the Thomas More Institute (TMI) fall adult learning programs. These newly-designed courses of reading for discussion-based learning will take place at the TMI reading rooms, 3405 Atwater Avenue (Montréal), above Sherbrooke and near the Atwater Metro.

Selected readings on the themes of asceticism, monastic life, identity and isolation in mass society.
Explores how to find spiritual meaning in a time which seems to value only technical progress. A central reading for the course is Karen Armstrong's Battle for God.
Readings and discussions towards understanding the limits and conditions of our capacity to answer the call of our fellow human beings.
A course designed to understand the importance of altruism or the caring instinct in Biology and religious faith.
Raises issues concerning the relations between the brain, human nature and ethics.

While reports of physical and sexual abuse have been given a lot or press lately, Keith Wright reminds the reader that there are many other kinds of abuse encountered within the church. In simple and clear terms, Wright details the other kinds of abuse including:
– Overworking people; always demanding more and more from the same people. Preying on people who can't say "no".
– The use of exclusively male language in worship.
– The abuse of Exclusivity as the conviction that one's belief system is the only correct or valid one and that all others are wrong.
– The abuse of clergy. The abuse of the clergy's spouse and children. Abuse by expectation. (For a fuller treatment on this subject read, "Clergy Killers" 1997)
A fun and insightful look into the ordained ministry from someone who has been at it for a while. Short 2-3 page chapters with titles such as:
– Don't talk about your "call", it will only confuse people.
– All Ministers are Interim
– Don't take things personally, even if they're meant that way
– Whether you admit it or not, You have absolutely no idea what's going on
– Goal setting gives God a good laugh
– New blood seldom cures a sick body
– You're not invincible, take a break.
Even the Archbishop of Canterbury has to go through a ministerial review ! The Report of the Review of the See of Canterbury is a bit of a read, but very interesting. Full of recommendations to lighten the Archbishops load at the diocesan and national level of the C of E so he can spend more time at the international level. Contains some good historical overview of the role of the Archbishop. One of the questions tackled is "Should the Archbishop of Canterbury always be, or could he be (what about "she"?) appointed in the future from elsewhere in the Communion? Read the report if your interest has been piqued.

A bi-monthly, ecumenical magazine. A good article in the Sept/Oct. issue on resisting the media's power to define and distort our view of the world.
Maybe it seems like old news now, but why not read some of the documents for yourself (instead of the media's distorted reporting) from the World Conference Against Racism, recently held in Durban, South Africa.

This famous passage by John Donne (1573-1631) comes from Meditation 17, from Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions, 1624.
.... No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were. Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bells tolls; it tolls for thee ....
Fron the Anglican Digest
1) I was made to wash as a child.
2) People who bathe are hypocrites; they think they are cleaner than others.
3) There are so many kinds of soap - I could never decide which one was right.
4) I used to bathe, but it got so boring - so I stopped.
5) I still bathe on Christmas and Easter.
6) None of my friends bathe.
7) I'm still young. When I'm older and a bit dirtier I might start bathing.
8) I really don't have time.
9) The bathroom is never warm enough (or always too hot).
10) People who make soap are only after your money.
Everybody is back to work and back to school. Here's a poem that might make you stop and pause and think; what's it all about?
Safe, by Charles Bukowski from Bone Palace Ballet (Black Sparrow Press).
the house next door makes me sad.
both man and wife rise early and go to work.
they arrive home in early evening.
they have a young boy and a girl.
by 9 p.m. all the lights in the house are out.
the next morning both man and
wife rise early again and go to work.
they return in early evening.
By 9 p.m. all the lights are out.
the house next door makes me sad.
the people are nice people, I like them.
but I feel them drowning.
and I can't save them.
they are surviving.
they are not
homeless.
but the price is
terrible.
sometimes during the day
I will look at the house
and the house will look at me
and the house will
weep, yes, it does, I feel it.
